Dunkirk [2017]

Directed by the talented Christopher Nolan, ‘Dunkirk’ tells the story of 400,000 British and French soldiers who are trapped in Dunkirk, a commune in Northern France, by their common enemy [Germany]. This event, based on a true story, happens in 1940, in the middle of World War 2.

I strongly believe that this movie will get an Oscar for its poetic and gorgeous visuals. I just really loved how Nolan decided to tell this horrible story through striking visuals and through emotional instrumental music. He relied on silence, not on dialogues to convey emotions.

Even the colors transfer the emotions felt by the characters, convey the mood of each scenes and reflect the era the movie is set in: everything is blue and very saturated with touches of red. The production design was very well thought of and studied, as well as, the cinematography; I love how well-established the shots are.

Basically, Nolan chose to show us, not tell us [Below are some stills to give you an idea of what I am talking about]

Now let’s talk about the story: Christopher Nolan wrote the film based on a real life event, an event that actually happened during the second world war. I personally liked how Nolan developed and constructed the plot, it has a really slow pace yet not boring at all. I think the slow pace was made on purpose to make us feel what the soldiers felt when they were waiting to get rescued.

There’s one thing I did not appreciate in this film and that one thing is not a mistake, it is more of a directorial choice: I thought the acting was dead, all the actors act the same way and I did not like that. Moreover, even the characters look alike, they don’t have distinctive personalities and their is no character development. I know that this movie is about a concept not about the characters, it’s about 400,000 soldiers being surrounded by their enemies but I was still bothered by this directorial approach.

In conclusion, Dunkirk has amazing visuals that really transports you back in the 1940s, in Dunkirk but I did not like the actors’ performances. This movie is a beautiful memorial for the 2nd World War and I definitely encourage you to watch it.

  1. It reminded me of Heat and The Insider in how it builds up the tension and then releases the pressure in.a motion of brilliance. The Spitfire pilot punching the bogey with 2 out and 3 on was as good as the 15 minute shoot out and release in Heat.
